movie quest on hold

I attempeted to continue the "Best Picture Watch" from the 70's with The French Connection (the only one of the remaining three from the 70's that interests me). Right at the climax of the movie, as the first shot of the final stand-off is fired, the movie freezes. I wiped off the disc and tried it again. No good. I tried playing it in my computer. No good. I brought the disc back and they put it through their disc buffer. No good. I've tried finding the movie at other rental locations. Nothing. I guess I'm stuck for now.
